AUSTRIA TO TAKE ON GERMANY in ODI's on 5th & 6th MAY

Austria will do battle with historic rivals Germany in two ODIs to take place in Seebarn and Vienna on 5th/6th May, 2012. For Austria these matches will provide the ideal preparation for the forthcoming World Cricket League Div. 8 qualifying tournament later on in the summer. Austria`s record against Germany in ECC (former ECF) tournaments is one win and two defeats: 1995 lost by 18 runs in Oxford, UK, ; in 1996, won by 56 runs in Osnabrück, Germany; in 2002, lost by 150 runs in Northern Ireland This year`s planned matches will be the first encounter in 10 years between the two countries. With home advantage and strong local support, Austria should have a good chance of at least one victory against Germany which is placed two divisions higher in the European cricket league tables.

Welcome to the official Website of the ACA!

The Austrian Cricket Association (ACA) is the national umbrella organization of cricket in Austria. Cricket is a sport played with bat and ball and comes, as do football and tennis from England.

It was at the end of the 19th Century when English diplomats and English who took up residency wanted to indulge their sports in Austria.  Also the middle of the 20th Century during the occupation after the second world war , cricket was played by British soldiers.  At long last the little red ball has replaced the soft leather and speedy yellow balls.  In 1975 cricket experienced its resurrection in Floridsdorf , Vienna through the committed English teacher Kerry Tattersall.  What was at first thought of as as a school sport, developed into 13 clubs and has today in Austria almost 400 active players.  From this the CV was founded in the 1980s. Since 1992 the CV is also a recognised member of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The missed opportunity

In the last third of the 19th Century Australia and England formed the first international organisation today the world organisation.  With some more interest from spectators cricket  could have gone the way of football in Austria, and today could be counted to the founding members and well also play a deciding role in world cricket.  WIKIPEDIA gives a good insight into that time. This article, created circa 100 years later, shows tellingly how  cricket  in Austria is that did not have to be.

Cricket today in Austria

Austrian cricket has played in the international limelight again, thanks to the untiring efforts of it clubs and commited officers of the CV.  Milestones in the ascent of cricket in Austria is the creation of suitable playing fields.  One of the best grounds in continental Europe lies to the north of Vienna in Seebarn and from ambience, one of the most beautiful grounds in Europe is between Lake Wrthersee and the snow covered Karawanken mountains in Carinthia, in Latschach near Velden. In the middle of Vienna,  the Austria Cricket Stadium, that today first and foremost is used for youth training and education of the core of Austrian juniors.

With cricket Austria closes seamlessly on its history as a multi-national country.  The cricketers come from many different countries where cricket is a national sport, from A for Australia to Z for (New) Zealand.
